Networks for tomorrow

Energy Networks Investment Plan

Our grids form the backbone of society. Every day, families, businesses and local authorities rely on a safe and continuous supply of energy and on our infrastructure functioning properly. Reliability is therefore our top priority.

At the same time, we are preparing our grids for a future with more electric vehicles, heat pumps, local energy production and the electrification of industry. This energy transition requires extra capacity and flexibility. We are tailoring our investments accordingly.

Data Management Plan

There can be no energy transition without a digital transition. In the ‘twin transition’, services based on energy data help customers to save money, use renewable energy more efficiently and manage the energy system more effectively.

As a result, the volume of data will also increase enormously in the short term. This data must also be made available ever more quickly and easily. And the energy market of the future must remain stable and robust, even with the many additional data interactions. That is why we are investing in a Data Management Plan for the next ten years.

Sewerage investment plan

Fluvius is also responsible for the sewerage systems in 83 Flemish towns and municipalities. Here, we are the key partner for climate adaptation and the sewerage networks of tomorrow.

Fluvius aims to provide local authorities with optimal support in managing water resources intelligently, so that together we can develop future-proof (water) networks. Every year, Fluvius invests 130 million euros in sewerage.

Street lighting and the switch to LED

Fluvius manages public lighting in all 285 towns and municipalities in Flanders. In consultation with local authorities, Fluvius draws up a master plan for the transition to LED, whereby we replace traditional street lamps with LED lighting. Our strategy is: ‘The right light in the right place, at the right time’.

Warmth networks

Since early 2025, Fluvius has limited itself to the role of network operator for district heating networks. We do not produce or supply heat ourselves, except in exceptional cases.

For existing district heating networks that still use fossil fuels, we are working towards a complete phase-out by 2050, in line with European directives.

Asset Management

Asset management

Asset management forms the basis for the management and development of Fluvius’s energy networks. It involves the systematic and well-considered management of our infrastructure – such as cables, pipes, substations and installations – throughout their entire lifecycle. By weighing up performance, risks and costs, we make informed decisions regarding maintenance, renewal and investment.

The energy transition and increasing grid loads make robust asset management essential to continue guaranteeing a reliable, safe and affordable grid. That is why we adopt an integrated approach, inspired by international standards such as ISO 55000. We support this with data, analyses and continuous improvement. In this way, our networks continue to function effectively today whilst being ready for tomorrow.

Smart grids

Our electricity and gas networks form a complex and constantly evolving system. Our behaviour patterns are changing due to more renewable energy, more electric vehicles, more heat pumps, and so on.

As a network operator, we take responsibility for keeping that system safe, stable and balanced in the interests of households, businesses and local authorities. That is why we invest in smart infrastructure and data-driven network management. Digital meters, sensors and real-time monitoring provide both us and users with insights into consumption, production and grid load. Using this information, we manage our networks more effectively, plan investments on a sound basis and intervene more quickly when necessary.

We handle this data with the utmost care: the protection of personal data and cyber security are an integral part of our digital approach.
