Who is Fluvius? What do we do for you?
Fluvius is a Belgian grid company, active in all Flemish cities and municipalities. We have around 5,800 employees. Together we build and manage the public utility lines in streets which supply electricity, natural gas, sewers and heat to our customers.
Some of the main tasks and services performed by Fluvius:
Distribution of electricity, natural gas and heat | We manage, maintain and update the distribution system for electricity, natural gas and heat. We ensure a reliable and safe supply of these energy sources, right to your doorstep. |
Digital meters | We install digital meters, which allow you to accurately measure and manage your energy consumption. |
Public lighting | We install and maintain public lighting in Flemish cities and municipalities. We also replace obsolete streetlights with energy-efficient LED lighting. |
Waste water management | In some regions, Fluvius is responsible for wastewater and sewerage management. |
Connections and repairs | We organise the connection of new buildings to the electricity and gas grids. In the event of breakdowns or damage, we carry out the necessary repairs. |
Grids for Tomorrow | Electric cars, solar panels and heat pumps - we are all using and producing more electricity. Our role? Getting the grids ready for tomorrow. |

Our mission
To sustainably connect society through our multi-utility grids

- We create sustainable connections. We work for the long term, and we contribute to a better environment and climate. We support communities with forward-looking solutions that also provide comfort in the long term.
- Fluvius is a ‘multi-utility’, working in a range of different utility sectors. Because we believe in the synergies and economies of scale this creates. For all the partners and customers of our business.
Our vision
Fluvius wants to actively cooperate and help bring about the energy transition and climate adaptation in Flanders.
- Fluvius wants to play a key role in the energy transition and climate adaptation. To make these two large-scale changes possible in Flanders, we are building the 'grids for tomorrow' . Our future-oriented utility solutions and systems ensure that we can live here comfortably even (the day after) tomorrow.
- We are not alone in this regard, and combine our forces with all cities, municipalities, customers, partners, suppliers and investors. Collaboration is the key. Also across grids. Because together we achieve more. The result? More efficiency and better service for our customers. Because at Fluvius, the customer comes first. Every day, we work to provide smooth and reliable services.
- We count on the competence and sense of responsibility of our employees in providing this service. We offer them a pleasant working environment where everyone feels comfortable, thanks in part to shared leadership and a culture of trust.
Our charters
Fluvius is firmly embedded in our society We therefore also have a sense of responsibility. That's why, in line with our social mission and values, we clearly formulate what we stand for in our charters.
More than 100 years of history and expertise
Fluvius has a long and rich history in energy distribution and utilities. Our expertise and know-how go back more than 100 years. The early 20th century saw the start of the first local 'producer-distributors' of electricity, primarily for lighting. In the interwar period, the electricity grid was further extended in Flanders. In 1936, the last municipality was connected to the grid.
For gas, we have to go even further back in time. The first light and gas distribution pipelines in our regions were laid in 1818, specifically for public lighting. Since the mid-20th century, natural gas, supplied via pipelines, has also played an important role for heating and domestic hot water.
And the development of a sewerage grid also started more than a century ago. For the disposal of rainwater and wastewater, just about every Flemish city made efforts to build urban sewers in the second half of the 19th century.
All Fluvius' operations have their origins in partnerships between cities and municipalities for utility services. That is the basis for our more recent operations, such as building heating grids.
