Innovation plays a crucial role in the development of the Grids for Tomorrow. That's why we are regularly involved in studies and research reports.

Energiecomplementariteit op bedrijventerreinen

Energy complementarity in business parks

The electrification of transport, heating and industrial processes is increasing the strain on the electricity grid, with bottlenecks becoming increasingly common in business parks. This puts pressure on grid expansion and new connections, whilst grid reinforcement is time-consuming and costly. This research report explores energy complementarity as a complementary strategy to utilise the existing grid more efficiently through collaboration between businesses.

The report analyses how coordinating energy production, consumption, storage and flexibility can help to smooth out peak loads and reduce reserved grid capacity. Using practical examples, an assessment framework and costed case studies, the study provides insight into the opportunities and preconditions for energy complementarity in Flemish industrial estates.

Study into 'time of use' grid tariffs

Commissioned by the Flemish energy regulator, Fluvius conducted a study in 2023 on whether it was necessary to introduce 'time-of-use' tariffs at the distribution system level in Flanders. That means you pay a higher or lower tariff at certain times, taking into account the peak load of the grid.

Follow-up study available

In 2024, also commissioned by the Flemish Utilities Regulator, a follow-up study was launched to examine in greater depth the practical implementation and societal impact of time-dependent grid tariffs. That study was completed in 2025; the executive summary and the full report can be viewed here.
