Lower CO2 emissions
We have an ambitious transition plan to reduce our own climate impact and that of the entire value chain. We aim to achieve climate neutrality by 2040 for our own operations and by 2050 for our entire value chain.
The measures we are taking to achieve this have an impact across a wide range of areas. These include our natural gas and electricity distribution networks, our vehicle fleet, our buildings, our use of materials and our procurement processes.

Energy transition
The energy transition in Flanders is central to Fluvius’s mission and vision. It largely determines where we invest and what we work on every day. Through our investments, the projects we carry out and the networks we manage, we are helping Flanders move towards a future-proof, climate-neutral society.

Resilient to a changing climate
The climate is changing. Heavy rain, more severe storms, longer periods of drought and more extreme temperatures are putting our infrastructure under strain. Our energy networks, sewerage systems and street lighting must, of course, remain operational under increased strain and in extreme conditions. So we are preparing them for the future. This ensures that our services remain reliable in an increasingly unpredictable climate.

Sewage in the water cycle
Water is not a given. Flanders faces both excessive water and water stress (i.e. periods of drought). As a sewerage operator, we play a direct role in the water cycle, as we build, manage and upgrade sewerage networks. We invest in systems that better collect, store and infiltrate water. Together with local authorities, we work on rainwater and drought plans and encourage the reuse of rainwater.

Care for the environment
Our commitment to the environment goes beyond climate adaptation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We prevent local pollution by proactively monitoring and improving the impact of our activities on air, water, soil and biodiversity. Naturally, we do so in accordance with current environmental legislation. Should an environmental incident nevertheless occur, we monitor and report it meticulously.

Space for biodiversity
Our infrastructure is located on public land in Flanders. That is why we work with care, taking our surroundings and biodiversity into account. Most of our networks are underground, running alongside existing roads. Above-ground installations take up little space and are often located in urban areas. This ensures that the impact is minimal.
Nevertheless, we realise that our works have a local impact on nature. So we remain vigilant. When applying for permits, we carry out a biodiversity assessment where necessary. During works, we strictly adhere to the applicable standards, avoid damage to nature and carefully restore the environment so that no biodiversity is lost.

Circular use of materials
The energy transition requires a great deal of materials, such as cables, pipes, cabins and control systems. These, in turn, require a significant amount of raw materials. That is why we manage them as intelligently and circularly as possible. We minimise our material consumption wherever possible, explore options for sustainable and recycled materials, and maximise the lifespan of our infrastructure. At the end of their service life, we ensure that materials are reintroduced into the supply chain as much as possible.
