Lower CO2 emissions

Mobility

In 2023, we decided to fully electrify our lease vehicles. This is a significant step that will be completed by 2030.

Full electrification of all company vehicles by 2030 does not appear feasible. We are therefore exploring additional measures to reduce their environmental impact. For example, we are looking into alternative fuels, route optimisation to reduce distances, and other modes of transport.

Facilities

By 2040, we at Fluvius aim to have phased out the use of fossil fuels. And by 2050, we will go one step further with energy-neutral facilities. We are embedding these objectives in our accommodation plan and developing them further on a building-by-building basis. In addition, we are gradually integrating improvements in the areas of energy efficiency, fossil fuels, circularity, biodiversity and accessibility.

Leak detection of methane emissions

We continue to actively reduce methane emissions. Current measures focus on frequent leak detection, improved working methods and the replacement of old pipes. In doing so, we are taking additional steps to prevent damage caused by excavation work. At the same time, we are exploring further, financially viable measures to reduce methane emissions even further.

Since the second half of 2025, we have been using bicycles fitted with the latest generation of sensors to detect gas leaks. This enables us to locate methane leaks more quickly and accurately. In a subsequent phase, we will assess whether we can also deploy these sensors in other vehicles.

SF6

Our high- and medium-voltage switchgear contains sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), a potent greenhouse gas. Fluvius is actively working towards the transition to SF6-free alternatives, thereby complying with European regulations to phase out SF6 gradually. At present, these alternatives are still very limited in availability, but we are monitoring market developments and adapting our plan where necessary.

Climate-neutral construction sites

At Fluvius’s construction sites, emissions mainly stem from the use of fossil fuels in vehicles and machinery. Measures to make construction sites climate-neutral focus on the electrification of vehicles and site machinery, as well as on eliminating bottlenecks and optimising logistics and processes. These solutions often have a positive social impact too, such as reduced noise and odour nuisance. A more pleasant site environment is beneficial for both our employees and local residents.

Working in synergy

As a multi-utility company that combines gas, electricity and sewerage services, we aim to connect society in a sustainable way. Collaboration and synergy offer opportunities for greater efficiency, reduced disruption to the public and a significant contribution to climate targets. At present, we are not yet fully exploiting these benefits. That is why we are investigating how our multi-utility approach can deliver additional sustainability gains, with screenings and pilot projects as the first steps.
