Avoiding light pollution
Fluvius is actively committed to reducing light pollution through sustainable and smart public lighting. Through the large-scale switch to interactive LED lighting, we precisely adjust light levels to suit the time, location and usage. Using centralised digital control, we can dim and switch off lights where possible, without compromising safety. We opt for luminaires that direct the light downwards, thereby limiting unwanted light spill. Together with local authorities, we strive for efficient lighting that respects people, nature and the environment.
Bat-friendly lighting
In nature-sensitive areas, Fluvius sometimes opts for bat-friendly lighting, in consultation with local authorities and nature conservation bodies. We use lighting with a red-rich spectrum, as bats are particularly sensitive to short-wavelength blue and ultraviolet light. They are less sensitive to red light, so it disrupts their nocturnal behaviour less. We always combine this choice with other measures, such as directional luminaires, low light intensity and lighting that we dim or restrict in terms of duration. In this way, we strive to achieve a good balance between safety, functionality and respect for biodiversity.
Underground infrastructure that respects flora and fauna
Fluvius manages the electricity distribution network, which is largely underground. This means there is no risk of birds colliding with the lines – unlike with overhead high-voltage power lines (managed by Elia). By laying our networks underground, we therefore also minimise the negative impact on bird populations and the landscape.
